Transit Insurance
Transit insurance protects your horse whilst being transported by road, rail, sea, or air. Whether you're moving to a new property, competing at a distant venue, or shipping internationally, our transit cover ensures your horse is protected from loading through unloading. We cover accidents, injuries, and loss during transport, with straightforward claims and support from brokers who understand equestrian transport logistics.
What's Covered
Complete Protection During Transport
Transport is one of the riskiest activities for horses. Loading and unloading accidents, highway incidents, float breakdowns, and long-journey stress can result in injury or death. Our transit insurance covers your horse from the moment it's led into a float, horse float, railway horsebox, or aircraft until it's safely unloaded at the destination. This includes accidents on public roads, incidents whilst stationary at event grounds or rest points, and emergencies during air or sea transport. Horse float accidents are a leading cause of transport-related claims in New Zealand, and we recognise this significant risk. Whether you're moving horses domestically across Auckland to Christchurch or competing at Woodhill Equestrian Centre, our transit cover is essential protection.
Loading, Unloading & Float Accidents
The vast majority of transport incidents occur during loading, unloading, or within the first few kilometres of travel. A nervous horse may panic whilst loading, slip during the unloading process, or react unexpectedly to the movement and noise of a moving float. Our cover pays for injuries sustained during these critical moments. If your horse is injured whilst being loaded or unloaded, emergency veterinary care is covered under the policy. Accidental injury caused by contact with the float, fittings, or other horses during transport is also included. We recognise that many horses dislike float travel and may injure themselves—our cover protects you financially in these scenarios.
Highway & Roadside Emergencies
When transporting horses over long distances—for competition events, breeding, or relocation—roadside emergencies can be costly. Float mechanical breakdown, collision, or accident resulting in injury to your horse are covered. If your horse is injured on the road and requires emergency vet care before reaching the destination, those veterinary fees are paid. We also cover the cost of emergency transport assistance (towing, roadside help, re-routing) in many cases. New Zealand's North and South Islands both have equestrian transport routes where this cover is invaluable. Motorway transport to Auckland equestrian events, Canterbury horse trials, or Waikato stud visits all carry transport risk.
Competition & Event Transport
Sport horses compete across New Zealand at venues like Woodhill (Auckland), National Equestrian Centre (Taupo), Canterbury Show, Hawke's Bay Show, and smaller regional competitions. Transit to and from these events is a critical coverage need. Our annual transport cover protects your horse on every journey—whether a day trip to a local show or a multi-day journey to a national competition. This includes coverage whilst the horse is stationary at the venue (loading/unloading, during the event, etc.). Many competition organisers in New Zealand require proof of transit insurance.
International & Air Transport
If you're shipping a horse internationally—exporting breeding stock, sending a sport horse to compete overseas, or importing a new addition to your stud—international transit insurance is essential. We cover transport by sea (container shipping), air (commercial equine flights), and international road routes. Premiums reflect the distance and method of transport. Most international shipments are covered for the duration of the journey, including quarantine periods if required. New Zealand breeders often export thoroughbreds or sport horses to Australia, Europe, and other destinations—our international cover protects these valuable animals.

Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is covered during transit?
Transit cover pays for injury or death occurring whilst your horse is being loaded, travelling, or being unloaded. This includes accidents on public roads, float/horse float breakdowns resulting in injury, accidents at event grounds or competition venues, and emergencies during air or sea transport. The cover is active from moment of loading until unloading at the destination. This is comprehensive—it covers the entire transport journey, not just movement on public roads.
Do I need a separate transit policy or can it be added to my mortality cover?
Transit can be purchased as a standalone policy for specific journeys or as an annual add-on to your mortality cover. We recommend annual cover for horses transported frequently to competitions or events. Single-trip cover (typically NZ$80–NZ$150) is cost-effective for occasional moves, whilst annual cover (NZ$300–NZ$500) is better value if you transport more than 3–4 times per year.
Does my float driver need special insurance or certification?
Transit cover is about protecting your horse, not the vehicle. Your driver should have appropriate vehicle insurance and a valid driving licence. We don't require specialist driver certification, but horses are safest when transported by experienced, careful drivers who understand equine behaviour. If you transport your own horse, ensure you're a confident driver and your vehicle is roadworthy.
What happens if my horse is injured during loading?
If injury occurs during loading and veterinary care is needed, contact us and your vet immediately. We'll authorise emergency treatment. Provide your vet with your policy details and they can often invoice us directly. We cover emergency vet fees resulting from loading-related injuries. Many horses panic during loading—our cover protects you financially if this results in injury requiring veterinary treatment.
Is international air transport covered?
Yes, we can arrange international transit cover for airfreight shipments. This typically covers the horse whilst in care of the airline, including crating, loading, flight, and unloading at destination. You may need specific international equestrian transport documentation and health certificates depending on the destination country. New Zealand to Australia, Europe, and other destinations are all available. International freight is expensive, so cover is worth the investment.
What if my horse dies during transport?
If your horse dies as a direct result of a transport accident or incident during covered transit, this is a claimable event under the transit policy. You'll need documentation from the transporter and a vet's report if available. The claim limit applies—typically the insured value of the horse or the agreed cover amount. Death claims are treated seriously and processed swiftly.
Does transit cover apply when I'm transporting someone else's horse?
Transit cover typically applies to horses you own and are responsible for. If you're transporting someone else's horse (e.g., moving a client's horse for them, or transporting a horse you've purchased before ownership transfers), notify us of the details. The horse owner should ideally have their own cover, but we can sometimes extend yours to cover the journey.
What documentation do I need if I make a transit claim?
For a transit claim, we need: (1) details of the incident (date, location, how it occurred); (2) transporter/driver details and contact information; (3) veterinary documentation if the horse was injured or died; (4) proof of ownership; (5) photographs of damage if property is involved; and (6) our completed claim form. Contact us immediately after an incident so we can advise exactly what to collect and preserve.
