Major Medical & Surgical
Major Medical & Surgical insurance protects you against unexpected veterinary expenses. From emergency colic surgery to hospitalisation and advanced diagnostics, this cover ensures your horse gets the best treatment without financial burden. With limits ranging from NZ$10,000 to NZ$30,000 per incident, our plans cover everything from emergency surgery to specialist referrals, rehabilitation, and ongoing treatment.
What's Covered
Emergency Surgery & Hospitalisation
Unexpected illness or injury can result in emergency veterinary bills of NZ$5,000 to NZ$30,000 or more. Colic surgery alone can cost NZ$8,000–NZ$20,000 at an equine hospital, and when combined with diagnostics and post-operative care, total costs can exceed NZ$25,000. Our major medical cover pays directly towards these expenses, with limits of up to NZ$30,000 per incident. Hospitalisation, intensive care, diagnostic imaging (ultrasound, endoscopy, radiography), and surgical fees are all covered. We work with equine veterinary practices throughout New Zealand to ensure your horse receives prompt, quality care without delay for payment discussions. Most NZ vets will invoice us directly once we've authorised the claim.
Diagnostic & Advanced Treatment
Modern equine medicine relies on advanced diagnostics—CT scans, MRI, endoscopy, and blood work—which can exceed NZ$3,000–NZ$5,000 for a single investigation. Our major medical insurance covers these diagnostics as part of the incident cover limit. Whether your horse requires extended hospitalisation, rehabilitation therapy, hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, or ongoing medication following surgery, we support treatment plans recommended by your vet. We recognise that the right diagnosis and treatment can save your horse's life, which is why we cover these costs comprehensively. This includes costs associated with diagnostic referrals to specialist centres.
Colic Coverage & Specialist Referral
Colic is one of the most common equine emergencies in New Zealand, affecting horses of all ages and disciplines. Surgical colic can be life-threatening and extremely expensive—a typical colic surgery at an equine hospital (such as Equine Hospital of NZ or Bay of Plenty Equine Hospital) costs NZ$8,000–NZ$20,000. Our cover includes emergency colic surgery with no waiting period. We also cover referral to specialist equine hospitals and veterinary surgeons—whether that's a referral centre in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, or treatment from a specialist in surgical, medical, orthopaedic, or internal medicine disciplines. Your horse will receive the level of care it needs, and we'll pay up to your cover limit.
Lameness, Tendon & Orthopaedic Injuries
Sport horses commonly suffer lameness from tendon strain, ligament damage, fracture, or other orthopaedic conditions. Our major medical cover includes diagnostic and surgical treatment for these injuries. This includes ultrasound examination (NZ$500–1,200), radiography, MRI when available, joint injections, arthroscopic surgery, and specialist orthopaedic referrals. Many sport horses in New Zealand suffer career-threatening lameness at some point—major medical cover ensures they get the diagnostic and surgical treatment needed. Soft tissue injuries like tendon strain can be managed with controlled rehabilitation and may recover if treated promptly.
Respiratory, Neurological & Infectious Disease
Our major medical cover includes treatment of acute respiratory disease (pneumonia, severe heaves), neurological conditions (EPM, head trauma), and infectious diseases (strangles, equine influenza). These conditions often require hospitalisation, intensive medication, specialist diagnostics, and sometimes referral for advanced treatment. Respiratory infections are common in stables and competition venues throughout New Zealand, and early aggressive treatment improves outcomes. Neurological conditions may require intensive care and specialist assessment. Our cover supports comprehensive treatment without financial barriers.
Peace of Mind & Direct Vet Invoice
Knowing you can afford emergency vet care without financial stress is invaluable. Many owners choose major medical cover specifically for the peace of mind it provides—when your horse is critically ill, you want to make treatment decisions based on what's best for the horse, not what you can afford. Premiums vary based on horse age, value, and discipline, typically ranging from NZ$400–NZ$950 per year. This is a modest investment for comprehensive protection. Most veterinary practices in New Zealand can invoice us directly, meaning you pay only the excess (typically NZ$100–NZ$250 per incident) and we handle the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is covered under Major Medical & Surgical insurance?
This cover pays veterinary fees for unexpected illness or injury, including emergency surgery, hospitalisation, diagnostic imaging, blood work, medications, anaesthesia, and specialist referrals. Each incident is covered up to your chosen limit (typically NZ$10,000–NZ$30,000). Covered costs include veterinary surgeon fees, anaesthesia, diagnostic imaging (ultrasound, radiography, CT/MRI), blood work and laboratory tests, surgical fees and materials, hospitalisation and intensive care, medications and injections, rehabilitation and physiotherapy, and specialist referral fees. Routine preventive care (vaccinations, worming), dental work, farrier services, and elective procedures are not covered.
Is colic covered, and from when?
Yes, colic is a key part of major medical cover. There is no waiting period for colic surgery or emergency colic treatment. Emergency surgical colic at an equine hospital typically costs NZ$8,000–NZ$20,000, so this cover is valuable protection for any horse owner. Medical colic (non-surgical) is also covered if it requires hospitalization or extended treatment. Both types of colic treatment—medical management and surgical intervention—are included from day one of the policy.
Do I have to pay upfront and claim back?
Most veterinary practices in New Zealand will invoice us directly once we've authorised the claim. You may need to pay a small excess (typically NZ$100–NZ$250 per incident). For non-routine treatment, we recommend contacting us before proceeding so we can confirm cover and authorise the claim with your vet. Direct invoicing is faster and more convenient than paying upfront and claiming reimbursement. We can often authorise claims by phone within minutes.
Will pre-existing conditions be covered?
No, pre-existing conditions (lameness, respiratory disease, digestive issues, joint problems the horse had before the policy started) are typically excluded. We may offer cover for pre-existing conditions at a higher premium or with specific exclusions. Be transparent during quotation about any known health issues, including previous lameness, respiratory disease, or veterinary treatment. If you're honest about history, we can often structure cover appropriately.
How is the incident limit applied?
Your chosen limit (e.g. NZ$20,000) applies to each separate incident or accident. If your horse has colic surgery costing NZ$12,000, that's one incident. If later the same year the horse has a separate injury requiring NZ$8,000 of treatment, that's a second incident with its own NZ$20,000 limit. Once the limit is reached for an incident, we don't pay further treatment costs for that same incident, but subsequent incidents renew the limit.
Can I combine Major Medical with Mortality cover?
Yes, in fact we strongly recommend it. Many horse owners choose both mortality and major medical cover for comprehensive protection. Mortality covers death, while major medical covers emergency treatment and recovery. Together, they ensure your horse gets the best care possible. The cost of combining both covers is very reasonable—often NZ$1,000–NZ$2,000 annually for both, depending on horse value and age.
What happens if my horse needs treatment after hours or on weekends?
Emergency vet care at after-hours clinics or weekend hospitals is covered under major medical insurance. Many NZ horses need emergency treatment outside normal vet hours—after-hours clinics in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch are regularly used. These services cost more than daytime vet care, but it's all covered within your incident limit. We work with all major emergency veterinary clinics throughout New Zealand.
Is there a deductible or excess on claims?
Yes, each claim has an excess (also called deductible) that you pay. Standard excess is NZ$100–NZ$250 per incident depending on your chosen level. Higher excess options (NZ$500) are available if you want to reduce the premium. The excess is the amount you contribute; we pay the remainder up to your cover limit. This shares the risk and helps keep premiums affordable.
