Liability Insurance
Equine liability insurance protects you against legal claims if your horse causes injury to a person or damages property. From a riding accident at a public event to a horse escaping and damaging a neighbour's property, liability cover ensures you're financially protected. With public liability limits from NZ$1 million to NZ$5 million, our policies cover legal defence costs, court awards, and settlement payments.
What's Covered
Third-Party Injury Protection
If someone is injured as a result of your horse's actions—a rider falls and is hurt, a spectator is struck, a handler is kicked—you could face a costly legal claim. Third-party injury liability covers claims for damages, including medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering awards. New Zealand courts have awarded significant damages in equine injury cases, sometimes exceeding NZ$500,000 for serious permanent injuries (spinal cord damage, permanent disability, disfigurement). Our liability insurance protects your personal assets and ensures you're not personally liable for these devastating costs. This is why every horse owner should carry liability cover.
Property Damage & Escape Liability
A spooked horse may break through a fence and damage neighbouring property, vehicles, or buildings. Your horse escaping could result in a motor vehicle accident involving other road users. If your horse causes property damage, you're potentially liable for repair or replacement costs. Our liability cover includes property damage caused by your horse, whether it's a broken fence, damaged vehicle, or injury to another person's horse caused by your horse. Escaped horses causing traffic accidents is a realistic risk, particularly in rural areas and near roads.
Legal Defence & Court Costs
If you're sued following an incident involving your horse, legal costs can exceed NZ$20,000–NZ$100,000 depending on the complexity of the case. Our liability insurance covers legal defence costs, lawyer fees, and court expenses. We engage experienced legal representatives who specialise in equestrian law to defend your case. Even if the claim is unsuccessful, we cover your legal costs—this is a critical protection. Many successful insurers have prevented massive payouts through effective legal defence. Your legal costs alone can bankrupt you without insurance.
Public Liability Limits & Coverage Options
We offer public liability limits of NZ$1 million, NZ$2 million, and NZ$5 million per incident. Most horse owners choose NZ$2 million or NZ$5 million for comprehensive protection. The cost difference between NZ$2M and NZ$5M cover is modest (often just NZ$50–100 per year), so we recommend maximum cover. This protects you if a serious injury claim exceeds expected amounts. Coverage extends to your family members, children, or stable staff riding or handling your horse. Boarding facility operators should carry NZ$5 million minimum.
Competition & Event Liability
If you compete at equestrian events—showjumping at Woodhill, dressage competitions, eventing across New Zealand, or polo—liability cover is essential. Many competition organisers and event venues require proof of liability insurance. Our cover protects you at all sanctioned competitions and affiliated events. It also covers accidents during training for competition. If your horse injures another competitor, damages equipment, or causes property damage at a venue, liability cover pays. This is recognised as essential by Equestrian Sports NZ (ESNZ) and all major competition bodies.

Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as liability under equine insurance?
Liability covers injury to a third party (any person other than you and your immediate family) caused by your horse's actions. This includes riding accidents, kicks, bites, escapes causing property damage, or your horse causing a motor vehicle accident. It does NOT cover your own injury if you fall from your own horse (that would be personal injury insurance). Liability specifically covers claims made against you by other people.
Do I need liability insurance if my horse is boarded at a facility?
This depends on the boarding agreement. Many boarding facilities require that each horse owner carry their own liability insurance. Your facility may also carry a general liability policy, but it typically won't cover incidents caused specifically by your horse at fault. We recommend individual cover—it's affordable and protects you personally. Review your boarding agreement carefully to see what's required.
Is liability covered if someone is injured whilst riding my horse?
If an invited guest is injured whilst riding your horse through the horse's behaviour (spooking, bucking, rearing), this is typically covered. However, if you're an instructor and the student is injured due to your negligent instruction or unsafe practice, this may fall under Professional Indemnity rather than standard Liability. Riding instructors and trainers should carry Professional Indemnity insurance. We can advise on the right cover for your situation.
What if my horse escapes and causes a motor vehicle accident?
If your escaped horse causes a road accident or property damage, you could be sued by the other driver/property owner for damages. Your equine liability cover would protect you in this scenario. We'd cover your legal defence costs and any damages awarded (up to your limit). This is a realistic risk in rural areas near roads. This is why secure fencing and good horse management are essential—and why liability cover is so important.
Is there a limit to what liability covers?
Yes, the cover limit you choose (NZ$1M, 2M, or 5M) is the maximum we'll pay per incident. Within that limit, we cover legal costs, settlements, and court awards. If a court awards NZ$3 million in damages but you only carry NZ$2M cover, you're personally liable for the NZ$1M difference. This is why higher limits are recommended. The cost difference (NZ$50–100/year) is minimal compared to the protection provided.
Can I get liability cover just for the competition season?
Yes, we can arrange seasonal or annual liability cover. Annual cover (NZ$130–NZ$280/year) is most cost-effective and simplest. We also offer event-specific cover if you're organising a horse event—a one-day show, polo match, or clinic—which would cover your liability as the organiser. Seasonal cover is available but less common; most people find annual to be better value.
What if someone is injured at my boarding facility or private facility?
If your facility has paying boarders or clients using it, you should carry higher liability limits (NZ$5M recommended). Facility liability covers injuries to clients, boarders, and visitors occurring on your property due to your horse. This is different from operator liability (which covers injuries from running the facility itself). Most facility operators need both equine liability and operator liability insurance.
Does liability cover veterinary negligence or mismanagement claims?
No, equine liability insurance covers incidents caused by your horse's actions, not claims of professional negligence. If you're a veterinarian or farrier, you'd need Professional Indemnity insurance. If you're sued for improper care or handling of your horse (e.g., negligent feeding, lack of veterinary care), this might fall outside standard liability. Professional advice is important here.
