Racing & Syndicate Bloodstock Insurance

Thoroughbred racehorses represent significant financial investment. A competitive racing prospect might be valued at NZ$50,000–NZ$500,000+. New Zealand's racing industry, overseen by Racing NZ, involves thousands of owners and syndicates betting on racing bloodstock. Our racing bloodstock insurance provides all-risk mortality cover at competitive rates (3.0–3.8 per cent per annum) with specialised underwriting for racing risk. For syndicated horses owned by multiple partners, we work with the managing syndicate to ensure all owners are appropriately covered. We also provide Loss of Use cover for injured racehorses unable to return to racing.

Breeding Mare & Stallion Cover

Breeding is the foundation of bloodstock value. A successful breeding mare or stallion's value derives from reproductive productivity and genetic contribution. New Zealand stud farms in Waikato (Cambridge area), Canterbury, and other regions depend on breeding stock insurance. Our breeding-specific cover includes live foal insurance, which pays if the foal is stillborn or dies within a specified period. We cover breeding-related injuries (difficult foaling, uterine damage, reproductive failure) and provide Loss of Use protection if breeding ability is compromised. Breeding mares are offered at competitive rates reflecting their economic importance to stud operations.

Foal & Young Bloodstock Protection

Foals are vulnerable in their first months of life. Foal mortality can occur from infection, injury, or developmental issues. Our foal cover runs from birth (or in-utero if pre-breeding cover is purchased) through to weaning or a specified age. We also provide insurance for weanlings and yearlings—the young bloodstock being raised for future racing or breeding. Young bloodstock premiums are modest, often NZ$200–400 per year for healthy foals. NZB (Thoroughbred breeders) rely on foal insurance to protect their investment.

Stud Farm Operations & Liability

Thoroughbred stud farms have unique insurance needs. Beyond individual horse mortality cover, farms need comprehensive liability (public liability for visitors), business interruption cover (if operations are disrupted), and specialty cover for breeding operations. We provide stud farm packages including mortality cover for standing stallions, breeding mares, foals, and young stock, combined with liability and operational coverage. Many NZ stud farms depend on us for their comprehensive insurance strategy. We understand racing syndicate needs and farm operations.

NZB Insurance & Thoroughbred Market

New Zealand thoroughbred breeders, through NZB (Thoroughbred breeders), and racing operators, through Racing NZ, have specific insurance requirements. We work with NZB-registered breeders to provide comprehensive bloodstock insurance. Our thoroughbred insurance reflects market standards—NZB Insurance and other specialist providers recognise the unique needs of racing bloodstock. We provide insurance suitable for small private studs, commercial racing operations, and everything in between.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a vet certificate for thoroughbred insurance?

Vet certificates are required for bloodstock valued over NZ$287,500. Below this threshold, they're optional but recommended for high-value animals. The thoroughbred certificate includes health assessment, soundness evaluation, and breeding suitability assessment if applicable. It costs approximately NZ$400–600 and must be completed by a vet experienced with bloodstock.

What is live foal insurance?

Live foal insurance covers the risk of foal loss or stillbirth. The foal is insured for a specified percentage of the mare's value (typically 50 per cent), with cover running from conception through a specified period post-birth (usually 30 days or until weaning). This protects breeders against the significant risk of foal loss from infection, developmental issues, or other causes. It's essential protection for breeding operations.

Can I insure a racehorse in a syndicate with multiple owners?

Yes, we can insure syndicated horses. The syndicate manager typically arranges insurance with all partners named in the policy. Each partner has insurable interest and can lodge claims. We work closely with major racing syndicates to ensure appropriate coverage. Syndicated racing is common in New Zealand, and we support this ownership structure.

What happens to cover if a racehorse is retired from racing?

You can continue mortality cover on a retired racehorse. The horse is re-rated based on its new purpose (breeding, ridden sport, leisure). If it moves from racing to breeding use, we can adjust cover accordingly. Loss of Use doesn't apply post-retirement unless the horse was injured whilst racing and that injury prevented racing before retirement.

Does bloodstock insurance cover racing accident injuries?

Injury during racing is covered by our major medical component. Emergency veterinary care for injuries sustained during a race is covered. Loss of Use applies if the injury prevents return to racing. However, natural racing-related deterioration (arthritis, wear and tear) is typically treated as degenerative and handled separately from incident-based claims.

What is the difference between bloodstock and sport horse insurance?

Bloodstock insurance is tailored to racing and breeding value, with higher cover limits and specialised breeding protection (live foal insurance). Sport horse insurance covers competition horses (jumping, dressage, eventing). A horse can be both—a young horse in training might eventually race and then be retired to breeding, with cover adjusted at each stage.

Can I insure a horse with NZB if I'm a registered breeder?

Yes, NZB members and registered breeders can insure bloodstock through us. We work with NZB-registered studs throughout New Zealand. Discuss your NZB registration during quotation so we can ensure your insurance aligns with NZB requirements and guidelines.

What documentation do I need to claim for a foal?

For a live foal claim, we need: (1) proof the foal was born (vet report or foaling documentation); (2) proof of death if the foal died (vet certificate); (3) proof of ownership of the mare; and (4) our claim form. Claims must be lodged within 90 days of the foaling event. We process foal claims quickly given the time-sensitive nature.
