Key Features
High-Value Competition Horse Protection
Sport horses are high-value animals in constant competition. A talented showjumper, eventer, or dressage horse might be worth NZ$30,000–NZ$150,000+. These animals are transported regularly to competitions, ridden in competitive environments, and exposed to significant injury during training and events. New Zealand has major competition venues including Woodhill Equestrian Centre (Auckland), National Equestrian Centre (Taupo), Canterbury Show, and Hawke's Bay Show where sport horses regularly compete. Our sport horse insurance recognises this elevated risk profile. We provide comprehensive mortality cover (2.9–3.6 per cent per annum) with no claims excess, ensuring your investment is protected. For horses valued over NZ$57,500, a veterinary certificate from an approved equine vet is required to establish health and soundness.
Loss of Use for Career Protection
The difference between a sport horse and a leisure horse often comes down to performance ability. A showjumper with a career-ending lameness loses its competitive value, even if it survives and can be ridden recreationally. Loss of Use insurance protects against this scenario. If your sport horse suffers permanent injury preventing competition at its previous level, we compensate you based on the agreed percentage (25–100 per cent of value). For elite competition horses competing nationally, 50–100 per cent Loss of Use cover is standard protection. This is what separates sport horse insurance from leisure insurance.
Major Medical for Active Athletes
Sport horses in intensive training and competition have higher rates of injury and illness. Emergency surgery, lameness diagnostics, colic, respiratory issues—all are more common in working athletes. Our major medical cover includes up to NZ$30,000 per incident in veterinary expenses. This covers emergency surgery, hospitalisation, diagnostic imaging (ultrasound, radiography, MRI), orthopaedic specialist referrals, and rehabilitation therapy. Many competition venues require proof of major medical cover, and we integrate seamlessly with Equestrian Sports NZ (ESNZ) and all major equestrian event organising bodies.
Transit & Transportation Protection
Sport horses are transported constantly—to competitions, training facilities, cross-country events, and clinics. Transit insurance is essential. Our annual transit cover protects your horse on every journey from Woodhill to National competitions. Loading and unloading accidents are common causes of sport horse injury, and we cover emergency vet care resulting from transport incidents. Many sport horse owners add annual transit cover to their mortality and major medical policies for complete protection.
Liability at Competitions & Events
Sport horses are ridden in public venues—show grounds, cross-country events, polo fields, dressage competitions—where injury to others or property damage can result in legal claims. Our liability cover (NZ$2–5 million) protects you at competitions, training facilities, and public events. This includes coverage for incidents occurring whilst competing or training on other people's properties. Many competition venues in New Zealand require proof of liability insurance—our certificates are accepted by all major equestrian sports bodies including ESNZ.
Support Throughout Your Sport Horse's Career
We support your sport horse from young prospect through to retirement. Young developing horses benefit from lower premiums reflecting lower values. As your horse gains experience and value, we can increase cover. If your horse experiences injury and is assessed for Loss of Use, our team guides you through the process. When your sport horse retires from competition, we can adjust cover for its new use. We're committed to being your insurance partner throughout your sport horse's journey.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do sport horses need different insurance than leisure horses?
Sport horses have higher values (often NZ$50,000–150,000+), compete regularly (increasing injury risk), are transported more frequently, and have value tied to performance ability. Our sport horse policies reflect this elevated risk and include Loss of Use cover to protect career and competitive value. If your sport horse is injured and can't compete, Loss of Use compensates you. Leisure horses typically don't need this specialised cover.
What vet certificate is required for sport horses over $57,500?
Horses valued over NZ$57,500 require a vet certificate completed by an RCVS-recognised or approved overseas veterinary surgeon. This 5-point examination assesses health, soundness, and suitability for the intended discipline. The cert confirms age, breed, identifying marks, and assesses locomotion and general health. It must be completed within 6 months before policy inception and costs approximately NZ$300–500. This protects us against fraud and over-insurance.
Can I compete internationally with my insurance?
Yes, our sport horse policies include cover for domestic and international competition. If your horse competes overseas—at European events, Australian shows, or international competitions—you're covered. Transit cover is strongly recommended for horses competing internationally. We can easily arrange international transit insurance for shipping horses overseas.
Do I need to report competition records or earnings?
No, we don't require competition records or earnings documentation. We insure based on the agreed value of the horse at the time of policy inception. However, if the horse's value increases significantly (due to competition success, winning major competitions, or breeding prospects), you can increase cover mid-term by providing a new valuation.
Are riding lessons and coaching covered?
Your horse is covered whilst being ridden for lessons, coached training, or competitions. If you employ a coach or instructor who rides your horse, they're covered under your liability insurance. We recommend discussing coaching and training arrangements with us during quotation so we understand your horse's use fully.
What happens if my sport horse gets injured at a competition?
If your horse is injured at a competition (during the event or whilst present at the venue), emergency veterinary care is covered under major medical. If the injury is permanent and prevents return to competition, Loss of Use claims can be assessed through our specialised vet team. Liability is also active if your horse causes injury to another competitor or property damage at the venue.
What disciplines does your sport horse cover apply to?
Our sport horse cover applies to all equestrian disciplines—showjumping, dressage, eventing, cross-country, polo, polocrosse, hunter trials, and other competitive uses. Cover extends to training for these disciplines, competing at affiliated events, and non-affiliated competitions. We support all equestrian sports recognised by ESNZ and other governing bodies.
Can I reduce my sport horse cover if it's not competing during a season?
Yes, we can discuss adjusting cover if your horse is rested or not actively competing for a period. You might reduce Loss of Use cover temporarily if the horse isn't competing, then reinstate it when returning to competition. Contact us to discuss your situation—we want to keep premiums fair to your current use.
